My First Time in the Nevada Capitol: An Unforgettable Journey During the 83rd Legislative Session “Kourtney Wagner”

My name is Kourtney Wagner, and 2025 marked a pivotal chapter in my life when I stepped into the heart of Nevada politics as an attaché running the office for Assemblymember Reuben D’Silva (District 28) during the 83rd Nevada Legislative Session. What started as an exciting opportunity turned into one of the most rewarding, eye-opening experiences of my career. From the bustling halls of the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City to witnessing ideas transform into real legislation, this five-month adventure taught me invaluable lessons about government, teamwork, and perseverance.

The session ran from February 3 to June 3, 2025—a whirlwind 120 days where thousands of bills were introduced, debated, and voted on. As someone based in Las Vegas, relocating to Carson City for the entire session was a big adjustment. I had to rent a place up north, leaving behind the familiar lights of the Strip for the quiet, historic charm of Nevada’s capital. Being away from my family for nearly five months was tough; those weekends apart added up emotionally and logistically.

To stay connected, I often drove home to Las Vegas every Friday after the week’s wrap-up. Flights could get pricey, especially with last-minute bookings, so hopping in the car for that 7-hour drive (each way!) became my routine. I’d blast podcasts about policy or Nevada history to make the time fly, arriving home exhausted but grateful for those precious weekends with loved ones before heading back north on Sunday.

None of this would have been possible without my incredibly supportive wife Mary Wagner. Her encouragement kept me grounded during the long days and lonely nights in Carson City. She handled things back home seamlessly, reminding me why the work mattered. That kind of partnership made the sacrifices feel manageable and reinforced how personal support systems are crucial in high-intensity roles like this.

But let me tell you—the experience was absolutely worth it. Working in Assemblymember D’Silva’s office, I was front and center as ideas turned into legislation. I’d help track bills through committees, coordinate with constituents, and see firsthand how a simple concept from a community member could evolve into a draft, get sponsored, debated on the floor, and ultimately signed into law. It was fascinating to watch the process unfold: from late-night strategy sessions to the electric energy of floor votes in the Assembly chamber.

I had an absolute blast getting to know everyone involved—the elected officials from both parties, the dedicated lobby teams advocating for their causes, and the unsung heroes: the legislative staff who keep the Capitol running smoothly. From sergeants-at-arms to bill drafters and committee secretaries, it’s a massive team effort. The camaraderie was incredible; lunches in the cafeteria turned into networking goldmines, and I formed connections that will last a lifetime.

This first-time immersion in the Nevada Capitol demystified government for me. It’s messy, intense, and deeply human—full of passionate debates, compromises, and triumphs that directly impact Nevadans’ lives.

Now, building on that foundation, I’ve taken the next step: I’m proudly serving as the reelection campaign manager for Assemblymember Reuben D’Silva. After seeing his commitment to education, community development, and thoughtful policymaking up close, I’m excited to help him continue serving District 28. The session sparked a deeper passion for public service in me, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

If you’re curious about Nevada politics or considering a role in the Legislature, I highly recommend it—the rewards far outweigh the challenges. Have you ever worked in government or visited the Capitol during session? Share your stories below—I’d love to hear them!
