Nevada Assembly District 6 deserves a representative who truly understands the struggles of its residents—someone who has lived them, overcome them, and now fights for others facing the same challenges. That person is Assemblyman Jovan Jackson, and in 2026, we have the opportunity to reelect him to continue his vital work in Carson City.
Jovan Jackson made history in 2024 when he was elected as Nevada’s first formerly incarcerated state legislator. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Jovan grew up in the Northeast Vegas Valley, a community with deep roots for his family dating back to the 1960s. He graduated from Desert Pines High School and earned an Associate of Arts from the College of Southern Nevada, while building a career as an entrepreneur and mental health advocate. At just 19, he opened his first business, and for over a decade, he ran a mental health agency providing critical services to vulnerable populations.
Life hasn’t been easy for Jovan. He openly shares his past: a two-year prison sentence in his early 20s for conspiracy to commit robbery, tied to substance abuse issues. But incarceration became a turning point. He rehabilitated, worked as a wildfire firefighter, and upon release in 2018, dedicated himself to advocacy. As a stage 3 cancer survivor, Jovan channeled his health battles into creating housing programs for people receiving disability benefits and championing mental health support. His story is one of redemption, resilience, and relentless commitment to lifting others up.
In his first term, starting in 2025, Assemblyman Jackson has already proven he’s a voice for the voiceless. Serving on key committees like Health and Human Services, Government Affairs, Natural Resources, and Health and Wellness, he’s focused on issues that hit home in District 6. He presented legislation like AB 291, aimed at criminal history records and reducing barriers for the formerly incarcerated—drawing directly from his own experiences to push for fairer second chances.
Jovan’s vision is built on five core pillars that address the real needs of our community:
- Affordable Housing: Treating housing as a human right by expanding programs like Section 8 for all income levels.
- Criminal Justice Reform: Removing obstacles to employment, education, and housing for those with past records to lower recidivism.
- Welfare Rights: Boosting resources for seniors, food assistance, and accessible healthcare.
- Free Mental Healthcare: Building more crisis facilities so people can get help without cost, preventing tragedies.
- Public Safety Reform: Shifting toward community-based solutions with mental health professionals and social workers alongside traditional policing.
These aren’t just talking points—they reflect Jovan’s lifelong work with high-risk youth, veterans, seniors, the disabled, and the unhoused. As a senior board member of the Mass Liberation Project and advisor to nonprofits, he’s been on the ground making change long before entering the Assembly.
District 6 has a unique history as a historically segregated area and one of Nevada’s first integrated communities. Jovan gets that. He knows how past policies still impact us today, and he’s committed to bringing resources to North Las Vegas, the West Side, small businesses, education, labor unions, environmental justice, and immigrant rights.
In a short time, Jovan has shown he’s not about politics as usual—he puts people over profits. Reelecting him in 2026 means keeping a fighter in the Nevada Assembly who truly represents us: someone who’s walked the path from hardship to leadership and uses that perspective to build a better future.
